TEACHING HOURS AND TEACHING LOAD. Section 1 Work Day For the applicable agreement period, the normal work day will be seven and one-quarter (7 ¼) hours including arrival time fifteen (15) minutes before and departure time (15) minutes after the students’ school day. The normal work day will include uninterrupted prep time. The Building Principal, as authorized by the Superintendent, upon request of a teacher or group of teachers, may waive the requirement to remain fifteen (15) minutes after the school day for a specific day or days. It is recognized; however, that the proper performance of their duties may, on occasion, require these persons to work longer than the normal work day, i.e. for conferences, faculty meetings, department meetings, etc. Therefore, “mandatory meetings will occur two times per month and be no longer than 90 minutes in length, inclusive of the additional 15 minutes beyond the scheduled student school day. A schedule of the meetings will be distributed by June 30th of the previous school year, but may be changed at the discretion of the Principal with 48 hours’ notice.” Teachers will also remain at school after the fifteen (15) minutes described above, during one (1) day each calendar week for such periods of time as is necessary to provide students extra help, and/or to meet with parents or guardians, concerning the progress of their children or wards. No teacher shall be required to work more than a normal seven and one- quarter (7 ¼) hour day, including fifteen (15) minutes before and (15) minutes after the students’ school day, which will include uninterrupted prep time; this provision does not apply to other contractually agreed upon time and meetings. Should state law require a longer instructional day, or more days, the teachers shall work the added time and the parties shall immediately commence impact bargaining on the issue. This article does not purport to cover the arrival and departure time of teachers involved in special assignments. Section 2 Other Personnel Personnel other than classroom teachers will work at their assigned tasks for the length of the regular teachers' work day. TEACHING HOURS AND TEACHING LOAD. 9.1 Teachers shall be required to work on the days specified in the official school calendar and according to the schedule of opening and closing schools as determined by the Board. Mandatory professional development days shall not be scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays. Except for special orientation meetings for new teachers, teachers who are required to work extra days before or after the dates specified in the official calendar shall receive additional compensation at their appropriate daily rate. 9.2 Teaching hours do not apply to extra duty assignments, see “UHSAA and/or Extra Compensation Program.”

The standard workweek of teachers shall be Monday through Friday and the normal in-school time for teachers shall be as follows, unless professional duties, such as parent-teacher conferences, require teachers to remain for a longer period: Elementary (Young 5’s thru 5th) 8:15 A.M. - 3:40 P.M. Middle School (6 through 8) 7:30 A.M. - 2:50 P.M. High School (9 through 12) 7:30 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. Where the time extends beyond the last assigned period of the day, it shall not apply to Fridays or the day preceding holidays or vacation. The Administration may schedule a required parent-teacher meeting for an open house beyond the contracted school day or school year each year. In addition, each year a teacher shall be responsible to participate in one other parent-teacher meeting beyond the contracted school day which is mutually agreeable to the teacher and the Administration. B. The Administration, upon advance written notice to the Association President, may provide a normal in-school time as to any or all buildings different from that set forth in Section A. provided that: 1. The beginning and ending times for the teacher shall not be earlier or later than: Elementary 8:05 A.M. - 3:40 P.M. 2. The normal in-school time of the teacher shall not be increased as a result of such different schedule of hours. C. In the secondary schools and for elementary literacy and math coaches, the Administration may fix a schedule of hours beyond the above limits to accommodate an extended school. The normal in-school time of the teacher shall be continuous and shall not be increased as a result of such different schedule of hours. The individual teaching assignments within the departments affected by the above variation in hours shall be made by the Administration. D. All elementary teachers shall be entitled to an uninterrupted lunch period of not less than 35 minutes, and all secondary teachers shall be entitled to an uninterrupted lunch period of not less than 30 minutes. Lunch periods shall be duty free. In the event that the elementary lunch period is reduced from 40 to 35 minutes then the in-school time for teachers (Section A) shall be reduced by the same amount. E. The teaching load in the secondary schools (6-12) shall consist of a weekly ratio of 25 teaching periods to 5 periods of preparation for traditional semesters or 20 teaching periods to 5 periods of preparation for trimester. TEACHING HOURS AND TEACHING LOAD. A. As professionals, teachers are expected to devote to their assignments the time necessary to meet their responsibilities. Because it is administratively essential to maintain a record of attendance for all teachers, teachers shall be required to swipe their identification access card at the beginning of each work day. B. No extension in the daily working hours, seven (7) hours and five (5) minutes, shall be made by the Board without first negotiating with the Association. Days when regularly scheduled teachers' meetings are held shall not be considered an extension of the school day. Teachers' meetings shall be no more than one (1) hour in duration. The Board reserves the right to designate any one-day a week except Friday as teacher meeting day. The Board retains the right to adjust the daily schedule of each teacher within the regular workday. There shall be two (2) teacher meetings per month, except that there shall be one (1) additional floating meeting per quarterly marking period for a total of four (4) floating meetings per school year. The Principal reserves the right to schedule an emergency teacher meeting. At least two (2) days' notice shall be given for meetings. If an emergency meeting must be called without two (2) days prior notice, then faculty members who can substantiate a prior commitment shall be excused with the permission of the Principal. Teachers may depart the building following the exit of the regular school buses on Fridays, the day preceding the start of school holidays, and the day of Back-to-School Night/Open House. 1. Any teacher who is under a part-time contract shall not be required to stay beyond his/her contracted assignment. 2. The day prior to Thanksgiving, Winter break, and Spring break will be an early dismissal. The day after Back-to-School Night/Open House will be an early dismissalgdismissal for staff and students. TEACHING HOURS AND TEACHING LOAD. The School Committee and the Association recognize and agree that the teacher’s responsibility to his/her students and his/her profession generally entail the performance of duties and the expenditure of time beyond the regular work day, but that time and work schedules can and should be established. The work year of teachers, other than new personnel who may be required to attend additional orientation sessions, will begin no earlier than September 1st and will terminate no later than June 30th, but will in no event be less than one hundred eighty three (183) work days. The school calendar shall also include the scheduling of five (5) emergency/inclement weather days. (For payroll purposes, fractional amounts paid or deducted shall be at the rate of 1/183 per day.) Orientation days for other than new personnel shall be considered as scheduled work days. Any days above this limit shall be reimbursed at the 1/183 of the teacher’s contracted salary. The schedule for school hours for abnormal conditions of enrollment and housing is subject to modification by the School Committee providing that such modification will not increase the length of the teacher’s workday. Hours for normal conditions will be 7:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and under any conditions will not be more than a continuous six and one-half hour’s workday except for one hour per week for scheduled consultations with parents or administrative meeting times. Effective September 1, 2008, the teacher work day will be increased by ten (10) minutes, five (5) minutes in the morning and five (5) minutes in the afternoon (hours for normal conditions to be 7:15 a.m. to 3:35 p.m.), for a continuous workday of six hours and forty minutes, except for one hour per week for scheduled consultations with parents or administrative meeting times. A teacher at the Agawam High School shall be required to arrive at school five (5) minutes before the start of classes and shall not leave until five (5) minutes after classes conclude. A teacher at the Agawam Junior High School shall be required to arrive at school eight (8) minutes before the start of classes and shall not leave until five (5) minutes after classes conclude. All teachers may be assigned appropriate starting and dismissal times, provided that their total work day will be no longer than seven (7) consecutive hours, including the duty-free lunch period guaranteed to them under Section C of this Article, and no teacher will be required to report for duty earlier than 7:30 a.m. nor remain on duty later than 4:00p.m. The length of the assigned work day will be substantially equivalent for all teachers. If the High Schools operate on a block schedule, the following provi- sions shall apply: • Except where a teacher has agreed in advance, no High School teacher shall teach more than four (4) classes in one day. • The teaching load over a four-day rotation shall not exceed fifteen (15) instructional blocks, except that Science teachers shall not exceed twelve (12) instructional blocks over a four-day rotation, exclusive of lab blocks. • On any day when the schedule reverts to a non-block format, no High School teacher shall teach more than five (5) classes on such day. On such days, periods shall not exceed forty-four minutes, except that peri- od which includes homeroom may be sixty minutes in duration. Teach- ers shall also be entitled to a duty-free lunch and subject to duty assign- ments as provided hereinafter. Teachers shall receive one preparation period on such days. • In scheduling class assignments, the Board will make a reasonable ef- fort to achieve a maximum of three instructional preparations for core curriculum courses (i.e., Science, Mathematics, English and Social Studies.) • Teachers shall be entitled to a duty free lunch of no less than thirty (30) continuous minutes per day. If a teacher does not have assigned curric- ulum responsibilities, that teacher may be assigned duty for the balance of the lunch block up to three (3) times per week. • On a day when a teacher teaches an entire morning block of classes with no prep or other break prior to the lunch block, or teaches an en- tire afternoon block of classes immediately following the lunch block, the teacher shall not be assigned lunch duty on such day. • High School teachers shall not exceed four (4) duties over a four-day rotation. • High School teachers shall be guaranteed five (5) preparation blocks over a four-day rotation. • Teachers who agree to teach an additional class shall be compensated at 1/7 of their current salary.

Teachers are encouraged to participate in all activities of the school; particularly those activities in which their students are involved. D. The Board shall continue to recognize that teacher and department efficiency results from optimum teaching loads and hours or pupil contact, and shall continue its effort to maintain the same. E. Efforts shall be made so that regular classroom teachers in the Intermediate School and the High School shall not be required to change subject area teaching stations more than two times during the school day. Due to increased student population more than two (2) moves may be necessary for staff. However, no staff will be required to move more than three (3) times. Teachers shall accept flexibility in cases of innovation and curriculum change. F. Teachers shall have a daily duty-free lunch period in accordance with the State Board of Education regulations, and in accordance with present practice. G. Teachers may leave the building without requesting permission during their scheduled duty-free lunch period so long as said teachers sign out and sign in. H. No meetings, conferences, or interviews shall be scheduled with the teachers by the Administration during this duty-free lunch period. I.
